This page sets out definitions for some frequently used terminology.
Quote Fields
"Retail Price" - The full margin ticketed price that you would sell the item in the quote request to a normal retail customer.
"Insurance Price" - The discounted price you would be happy to invoice the insurer to supply the item in the quote request if it were to be replaced either exactly, similarly or for an in store credit spend based on a calculated quote.
"Comments to Claimant" - If you had any comments to further clarify your quote or to advise on how your quote may vary to the description. This is especially important if your quote is a similar replacement based quote.
Replacement Types
"Exact" - Supplying the item exactly in terms of design and specifications as per the description.
- That you could specially design, manufacture and supply using existing or currently available materials for the quoted values based on the description/information provided in the quote request as a minimum requirement.
- It may also mean that you can supply an exact model or serial numbered item as provided in the description.
"Similar" - Supplying the item in terms of similar design but still maintain the item’s particular specifications as per the description.
- That you could supply an item that could be specially manufactured using currently available materials or is pre-manufactured using a similar design but still using at minimum the specifications said in the item description/information provided in the quote request.
- This similar item must be able to be supplied to the insured for the quoted values with no additional out of pocket expense to them. It may also mean that you could supply a similar model or serial numbered item as provided in the description as long as its specification and quality are at a minimum to the ones in the item description.
"Calculation" - Being able to possibly supplying the item in terms of similar design if requested but specifications in your quote are based on values that may or may not be currently applicable.
- That you could supply an item that could be specially manufactured but have only quoted from price guides/catalogues whereby the materials may or may not be available or subject to price/value fluctuations.
- It may also mean that you cannot supply the item in the description at all but have simply provided an estimate of value only or ’ball park figure’ only.
"Can’t Quote" - Not being able to supply the item or if you simply do not want to quote on the description.
- That you cannot supply the item in the description exactly, similarly or even not being able to provide an estimate or calculated replacement value. You may also use this if you simply do not want to quote for whatever reason whilst showing to us you indeed received and read the quote request.
Gemstone Qualities
"Exceptional Quality"
- Highest possible quality in both material and cut.
- Top colour, excellent even distribution.
- Minimal to no inclusions.
- Fine cut quality, facets line up and make the most of the gemstone.
"High Quality"
- High Quality in both material and cut.
- Good colour, good distributing.
- Minimal inclusions barely visible to the naked eye.
"Average Quality"
- Average quality in both material and cut (most commonly used by manufacturing jewellers).
- Average to light or very dark colour, sometimes patch distribution.
- Average cut quality, may present with a window through the table.
"Commercial Quality"
- Large volumes of industry average material or below.
- Cut to maximise yield, quickly cut with minimal labour.
- Most abundant material, readily available.
"Low Quality"
- Heavily included.
- Poor colour either near colourless or very dark/opaque.
- Predominantly seen in low value or costume jewellery.
Manufacture Method
"Commercially Cast"
- Consisting of one piece only E.G wedding ring.
- Produced in bulk quantities, more than 10 pieces at a time.
"Commercially Cast/Hand Assembled"
- Consisting of more than one component that must be assembled by hand e.g wg and yg engagement ring.
- Produced in bulk quantities, more than 10 pieces at a time.
"Traditional Handmade"
- Constructed from stock gauge/plate metal using traditional techniques.
- No components can be cast or machine made.
"Custom CAD/Cast"
- Designed using CAD for a custom/unique design.
- Cast from the CAD printed wax.
- Cleaned up and assembled by hand.
"Hand Carved Wax/Cast"
- Wax carved by hand.
- Cast from one off wax.
- Cleaned up and assembled by hand.
"Machine Made"
- Constructed by machine.
- Machine assembled chain.
- Machine pressed settings or flat medallions.
"Small Run Cast"
- Predominantly small batches or one off cast products.
- Often from artisan style gallery’s or Hobby Jewellers.
